Thailand with the missus..
Bit like coals to Newcastle I know, but want to take the missus to Thailand in January and I’m after an upmarket beachfront style place etc but want to keep away from the usual places full of hookers, pissheads and back packing tree hugging wankers.

Seen a lot of posts on here about the place, and travelled there myself back in the day through work & had a blast, but no idea what it’s like now.

Reccomendations, places etc would be appreciated.

Fill your boots.

COYFI’s!

Now you're being picky.

I quite like the airport, particularly when arriving. There's something very reassuring in that mechanical voice that tells you you're approaching the end of the walkway.

Never had any real problems at BKK apart from long queues at immigration occasionally. But I have had longer waits at Schiphol which is famously efficient.

I went last year. Stayed at the Crown Lanta Resort and Spa in Ko Lanta (one of the few remiaining unspoilt places over there)

Lovely resort/hotel highly recommend it!

Re: Thailand with the missus..
The "new" airport at Bangkok is one of my least favourite - not for the staff, who are always pleasant - but for the fact I have to traipse through the shopping mall (then normally double back) to get to the gate.

If I want to shop, I'll go to a fucking shopping mall. As I want to fly, I go to an airport. If I absolutely have to get there 36 hours before my flight is scheduled to depart I'm quite happy to go sit at the gate with a book and WAIT.

There's a 6 part documentary series about Bangkok Airport starting this Thursday on BBC3 at 9pm.
The trailer gives an idea if what a freakshow the place can be. Unfortunately, I will be at Heathrow at that time as I fly to Bangkok at 9:30.

ironmark 2:41 - Went Koh Lanta a couple of years ago.

Lovely place and more chilled than other islands.

I'd recommend Koh Kood as well, just off Koh Chang.

Samui was my least favourite of the islands.
Although saying that we spent most of our time there drinking in the ark bar pool parties.

Re: Thailand with the missus..
mark - Not been but want to go some day, understand that's it's very nice there and have a lot of nice nearby islands that you can do in day trips etc, but not easy to get to, it's 4 hours on a ferry from Phuket, unless you want to risk a speed boat. It is not commercialised like Samui so very much a 'beach holiday' 4 days would be the max for me.

Can't be arsed to read all this
I have been going to Samui off and on since 1987 and. Although it's changed a lot I still love it, but this year we thought we might do something different as none of our usual crowd will be there. So has anybody been to Ko Lanta?

Yep , they are not quite so prevalent now their currency has dropped 50% in a month. All those condos have just doubled in price to them

The Russians were buying all the new properties on koh Samui the last time I was there, the Thai locals loathed the ignorant and rude Russians

Re: Thailand with the missus..
Problem is if you stay in Asia wherever you go is going to be rammed with the little darlings, you'll be paying prices premium as you know at that time

If you end up in Thailand give me a shout
